Introduction

In the realm of home audio, where the pursuit of immersive sound meets cutting-edge technology, Dynaudio stands as a testament to excellence. Whether you’re a cinephile seeking the next-level cinematic audio or an audiophile in pursuit of sonic perfection Dynaudio transcends the ordinary. As such in our Dynaudio Emit 50 review we will test their most affordable HiFi series and offer you an in-depth understanding of its capabilities.

Dynaudio Emit 50 Review (Floorstanding Loudspeaker) | Home Media Entertainment

The Emit series offers a complete lineup of speakers. Including two floorstanders, the Emit 50 and Emit 30, two bookshelf speakers, the Emit 20 and Emit 10 and one center speaker, the Emit 25C. Thus you have the ability to shape any setup you desire from simple 2 channels stereo all the way to a complete surround system for home theater use.

But let’s see what this remarkable speaker is all about. The Dynaudio Emit 50 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker that uses a single Cerotar tweeter, a 15 cm MSP mid-range woofer and dual 18 cm woofers. And all these are enclosed in finely crafted and tuned cabinets by Dynaudio themselves.

As we delve into our comprehensive review, we’ll explore every facet of this floorstanding loudspeaker. Dissecting its design, features, setup nuances, and its prowess in handling both cinematic experiences and musical symphonies. So without further delay let’s start our analysis.

Design, Inputs and Features

Exterior design & Dimensions

As always we will start with the design. The Dynaudio Emit 50 is not merely a loudspeaker. It is an exquisite piece of craftsmanship that seamlessly blends into any home decor. The speakers are beautiful, yet their simplistic look allows them to fit in many room designs and setups.

On the outside what is impressive is the remarkably clean look they have. There are no screws or mounting holes visible that surely add to their unique aesthetics.

The speakers measure 46 6/8” x 11 7/8” x 14 6/8” (1187 mm x 302 mm x 376 mm) including the feet and grille. While they weight a hefty 57 3/8 lbs (26 kg) each.

As for colors you can choose between Black, White & Walnut laminate finishes. The Walnut one is more of a dual color combination. As the front baffle is still black with the rest of the sides featuring a walnut look.

Cabinet

Crafted from 18-millimeter MDF, the cabinet of the Emit 50 is certainly an interesting piece of engineering. Designed and tuned in-house in Denmark, the cabinets are damped with specially selected polyester material. As a result the drivers have the most stable platform possible.

Grilles

The grilles that come with the Emit 50 use a black colored cloth. When attached to the speaker they cover about two thirds of the front baffle. Although we were always fans of speakers without grilles we can say that these ones we liked either way.

Furthermore the grilles are magnetically attached and this is the reason why the cabinet has such a clean front baffle. The absence of visible mounting material when the grilles are off imparts a sense of cohesion to the design. It’s not just about concealing. It’s about presenting a unified and polished visual experience.

Stand

Finally, the Emit 50 features very nice outrigger feet that come separately from the cabinets. They look nice and are very solid constructed. But as always keep in mind that these make the speaker’s footprint a big wider.

Drivers Design

At the heart of the Emit 50’s sonic prowess lies its driver configuration. Evidently what we have here is a true three-way system. They are meticulously designed in Denmark, with inherit advancements from higher series like Contour and Confidence.

At the top there is a 1.1″ (28mm) tweeter complemented by a 6″ (15 cm) mid-range woofer. For the lower end dual 7″ (18 cm) woofers give the Emit 50 the necessary punch.

Cerotar tweeter

But let’s start with the tweeter. The Cerotar tweeter, featuring a lightweight coated textile dome, is nothing short of luxurious for a speaker in this price range. The Hexis Dome, another Dynaudio innovation, situated behind the tweeter dome, enhances airflow and minimizes distortion.

This ingenious dimpled inner dome is placed close enough behind the fabric to stop unwanted resonance reflecting back to the rear of the playing surface. It keeps the frequency response smooth for cleaner, sweeter treble.

The tweeter is powered by a powerful Ferrite+ strontium carbonate ceramic magnet to give it more sensitivity. Its natural output guarantees less ear fatigue and an unblemished high-frequency reproduction.

MSP Woofers

The Emit 50’s woofers continue the legacy of Dynaudio’s proprietary MSP material. The MSP woofers in the Emit 50 come in two sizes. The 6″ (15 cm) mid-range and the dual 7″ (18 cm) woofers.

The mid-range one is derived from the Evoke and Contour series. It has a powerful ferrite ceramic magnet, a short version of the 38mm-diameter aluminium voice-coil (specifically optimised for midrange performance), and a lightweight surround. It’s designed for speed and precision.

The two 18cm units use trickle-down technology from the Evoke, Contour i and Confidence families to deliver high end low-frequency performance. Dynaudio claims -3dB at 33Hz which is impressive for this cabinet size.

The one-piece cones are again made from their in-house-formulated MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) material, complete with integrated dust-cap. Making drivers from one piece of material, rather than sticking on a separate piece, gives the playing surface a much better connection to the voice-coil behind it. And that means better control over their movement.

The woofer feature heavier copper voice-coils and dual stacked magnets vastly improving its motor movement.

Drivers Specifications

The combination of the 1.1″ (28mm) Cerotar tweeter, 6″ (15 cm) mid-range and dual 7″ (18 cm) woofers give the Emit 50 the following characteristics. A frequency response of 33Hz – 25kHz (+/- 3dB), 4 ohms of impedance and 86dB (dB @ 2.83V/1m) sensitivity.

The crossover frequency between the tweeter and the mid-range is set at 4,400 Hz. While the mid-range and the bass woofers is set at 540 Hz. The speakers come with a rating of 240W (IEC Handling).

Connectivity

The Emit 50, true to its commitment to simplicity, features a single pair of speaker terminals, forgoing the complexities of bi-wiring or bi-amping. While it may limit certain configuration options, it aligns with the speaker’s ethos of delivering exceptional sound without unnecessary complications.

Positioning & Setup

The speakers are carefully packed and come with all the manuals and extras you expect to find in a floorstander.

The feet come separately so you need to attach them yourself which shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes. The whole process is easy but you need to be delicate not to damage them during assembly.

Placement

In the manual Dunaudio includes instructions about setting them up and preferred distances. Specifically they suggest placing them about 2 m and 4 m (6 ft and 13 ft) apart.

They also claim that their speakers are designed to perform at their best when positioned as far from any walls as possible. Ideally, you should place them at a minimum distance of 50 cm (18 in) from each speaker to any wall.

Obviously these are general guidelines and give you an idea of normal positioning. But as always you need to experiment to find how they sound best to you and make changes accordingly.

For this review we left around 2 feet from the back wall in order to give them slightly more breathing space. Keep in mind that placing the speakers near a wall will increase their bass output. But this will be at the cost of overall definition so finding the best balance is always crucial. And with the Emit 50 being rear ported, placement near a wall can change the sound output to a certain degree.

Distance between the two speakers was, as usual, around 9 feet. We also like to toe-in them a little towards our viewing position for better sound imaging.

Running Hours

The Emit 50 we tried were pretty much new. So they surely can do better than what we initially experienced.

Most manufacturers do suggest to give them certain time in order to get the best out of them. This usually comes at about 100 hours on average for most brands. But each one gives slightly different numbers that’s why we do suggest 100 hours, to be on the safe side.

There is one last thing to mention here. In our movies testing we tend to strictly use a 4.0 channels surround system. A full surround system can sometimes cover some weaknesses many speakers have.

But with our half baked system it is easier to determine how they can perform. Obviously if you add a subwoofer along with a center speaker the overall immersion will increase tenfold. So keep this in mind when you read our reviews.

As for our music testing we always switch to a standard 2.0 channels audio setup that most audiophiles tend to go with. Obviously since we are more into movies we will use an AV receiver instead of separates. But as you can imagine a dedicated music setup will do even better in this regard.

So without further delay, and after finishing the necessary audio calibrations with our Marantz AV receiver, we moved on with our tests.

Movies

Lord of the Rings : The Return of the King

First destination is the epic realm of Middle-earth in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. This film uses a reference grade Dolby Atmos mix which is one of the best this medium has to offer. Bass

A critical aspect of music reproduction lies in the handling of bass frequencies. And the Emit 50 excels in this domain. The utilization of MSP woofers, coupled with a thoughtful design that incorporates rear ports, results in a bass response that is both impactful and controlled.

Whether it’s the deep resonance of a double bass in a jazz composition or the pulsating beats of contemporary genres, the Emit 50 dives in the low frequencies with finesse.

The strategic placement of the rear ports, combined with the option to fine-tune the bass using foam plugs, provides users with a versatile tool for tailoring the speaker’s low-frequency output to suit personal preferences and room characteristics.

From the intricacies of classical compositions to the pulsating rhythms of electronic beats, the Dynaudio Emit 50 embraces each genre with a sense of authenticity and precision.

For classical enthusiasts, the speaker’s ability to articulate the nuances of a symphony orchestra, placing each instrument in its spatial context, enhances the immersive quality of the listening experience. Transitioning to contemporary genres, the Emit 50 proves its versatility by handling complex arrangements with clarity and maintaining the separation of individual elements.

Final Thoughts

From its sleek exterior to the advanced technology encapsulated within, the Dynaudio Emit 50 stands as a testament to the pinnacle of sonic engineering. The Cerotar tweeter, MSP woofers, and meticulous driver design collectively contribute to a sonic profile that is both sophisticated and immersive.

With movies the Emit 50 proved to be a cinematic maestro. The spatial precision, dynamic range, and dialogue clarity established the Emit 50 as a cinematic companion capable of elevating the home theater experience to unprecedented heights. As for music, the Emit 50 showcased its prowess in handling a diverse spectrum of genres. It has the fidelity and overall quality to capture the essence of live performances, redefining the boundaries of sonic excellence.

As for their downsides, it was hard to find anything of essence. The speakers certainly need a lot of juice to sing and will certainly put some weight on your AV receiver or amplifiers. Also placement is of great importance as they need room to breath and show what they are capable of.

We reached the end of our Dynaudio Emit 50 review, but whether you are a cinephile seeking an immersive movie night or an audiophile delving into the intricacies of musical compositions, this speaker emerges as a versatile sonic companion. Its ability to adapt to different content, genres, and listening preferences positions it as an invaluable asset for those who demand nothing short of sonic perfection.

    • Hey Ronin. Not much to say really. It really depends on the room space. So better decide on your home first and then we can talk more about the speakers. There is no point in thinking about this now since you still don’t know about where you are going to place them.
