After Samsung brought their QD-OLED technology to the market last year all eyes were on LG and if they had something that could compete on equal terms to Samsung’s arguably excellent OLED technology. So in this LG TVs for 2023 guide we will go through all the new releases LG has in store for us this year and talk more about there capabilities and specs.

When it comes to expectations LG surely didn’t disappoint. Their new MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology combined with all the strengths of OLED panels was exactly what LG needed in order not to stay behind in the technology side of things.

Again, OLED Evo remains LG’s top performing series with QNED miniLED and QNED series occupying the mid-tier territory while their 4K UHD UR series naturally consists of their more budget friendly releases.

There are three things that we noticed looking at the entire 2023 TV lineup. First of all, as it was last year, there are no FALD equipped TVs. Their LED LCD lineup consist of miniLED, Edge LED and Direct LED TVs. So it seems that FALD TVs are a thing of the past for LG.

Furthermore we noticed is that in 2023 they have only a single miniLED TV available, the QNED85. Does this mean that LG is slowly phasing out miniLED TVs in favor of OLED? We are not sure but it seems that LG prefers to move their OLED TVs, like the B3 OLED and C3 OLED, into the mid-tier territory.

Additionally we noticed that there are no NanoCell TVs this year. So 2022 was the last we saw them as the QNED models seem to have taken that spot now.

OLED Evo Series

OLED Evo remains LG’s top performing series. Keep in mind that OLED Evo is not a specific panel or technology. It is a brand name that indicates a sum of technologies, including a panel and algorithms, that allow LG TVs to achieve this kind of picture quality.

For 2023 OLED Evo consists of three models. The LG Z3, which by the way is the only 8K TV LG has on offer, the LG G3 OLED and the LG C3 OLED.

From these three only the Z3 and G3 OLEDs use a combination of the new MLA based OLED EX panel along with a heatsink. On the other hand the LG C3 OLED is using the 2nd generation OLED EX panel, but without the MLA technology or the heatsink.

Additionally the OLED Evo series is the only TVs that come with LG’s best processor. This is the a9 AI Processor 4K Gen 6 and comes with a few upgrades compared to last year that we will talk a bit further down in the article in the dedicated section for it.

Naturally all OLED Evo TVs have the latest image and gaming technologies including four HDMI 2.1 ports, 100/120Hz panels, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, DTS and obviously the new webOS 2023.

OLED series

Regarding the OLED lineup, it is a bit of a mixed bag this year and it seems that LG is not entirely sure of how to handle this series. And we say this because while last year the offered the A2 OLED in all markets, the A3 will not come in the US or UK markets which is a rather strange decision.

A new addition to the OLED family is the LG M3 which features a wireless design and comes with a “Zero Connect” connect box similar to what Samsung has in some of their models.

So the LG B3 OLED will be the main unit in this series with the A3 seeing a rather limited release and the M3 being more of a niche model.

Although the OLED series will use the inferior a7 AI Processor 4K Gen 6, except for the M3 which still uses the a9, it retains many of the features we find in OLED Evo including HDMI 2.1 ports (except the A3 which comes with HDMI 2.0), 100/120Hz panels, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, DTS and the new webOS 2023.

QNED miniLED series

The QNED85 is the only QNED miniLED TV available in 2023. Although the reason for that is not known, maybe LG is trying to promote their OLED TVs more in the mid-tier section instead.

The QNED85 will have many of the same features we see in the LG B3 OLED so in terms of technologies and features these two are very similar with the only obvious difference being the panel technology.

QNED series

Moving down the lineup we find the traditional QNED models with two available this year. The QNED80 and QNED75. Both of them are Edge LED TVs but use different panels, frequencies and processors.

Here we need to make special mention to the QNED80 as this is the most affordable TV in LG’s 2023 lineup that comes with a 100/120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 ports making it the least expensive gaming TV you can get.

4K LED LCD series

As NanoCells were completely phased out the next in line are the simple 4K UHD models which come with the UR model number for 2023. Many of these 4K TVs have exactly the same specs, or rather very similar ones.

Here we find a mix of Edge LED and Direct LED backlight models and all of them support only HDR10, no Dolby Vision here. Different model numbers usually are aimed for different markets and regions but in general most of them use the same specs while having slightly different smart settings depending the region they are made for.

New Developments For 2023

Obviously the most notable addition this year was the introduction of the new MLA technology. In addition to that LG introduced some other features and tech that may not be so aggressively advertised as LG’s new panel but surely add to the overall value of their models.

So let’s see in a bit more detail what new there is from LG this year.

MLA OLED Panel

To keep things simple to understand the new MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology that LG introduced to their OLED Evo series is basically a layer of tiny micro lenses that enhance the light produced by the OLED panel.

Think of it like a dark room with a single light. By adding multiple mirrors in the room you enhance the light output by reflecting the light more without the need to actually use more lights. In a similar way the OLED panel can produce more light without the need to push it even more, risking possible burn-in.

This new technology not only allows for much higher brightness output than was possible in the previous years but also improves on the already very good viewing angles of OLED panels.

a9 Gen 6 AI Processor

As every year, LG brought their new processors for 2023. These are the a9, a7 and a5 AI processors in their 6th generation.

These chips seem to carry over all of the previous features we saw in the older generations with some further improvements. These include the OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro and its ability to do 9.1.2 up-mixing instead of 7.1.2 channels that was possible last year.

HDMI 2.1 QMS Support

LG has been offering four HDMI 2.1 ports with 48Gbps capabilities for some of their models in 2023 making them the only brand along with Samsung to do so. If there was one thing missing these years that was QMS (Quick Media Switching) which is part of the HDMI 2.1 protocol. And this is finally supported in some of their models this year.

Basically QMS eliminates the black screen that occurs during framerate change in the signal. So for example if you play a game in your PS5 in 60Hz and you change to 120Hz you will notice a black screen for a few seconds. With QMS this does not happen any more. But keep in mind that both connected devices need to support this for it to work. Additionally this works only when the framerate changes while the resolution remains the same.

Regarding the rest of the competition, no other brand has yet to announce support for QMS in 2023. So for the time being LG is the first to fully support it.

DTS Makes a Return

Throughout the years sound always felt like it was an afterthought for most brands as there is little you can do about it with so limited space. Nevertheless supporting all formats is a basic feature that we always are strong advocates of. A few years back, when LG and Samsung announced they would drop DTS support from their TVs it was a sad day indeed.

And when we thought that DTS was seeing its last days in the TV market LG announced that they will bring it back for some of their new 2023 releases. Basically this was news we were hoping to hear for some time now.

Keep in mind that while many models do support DTS playback the TVs cannot playback DTS:X. But this is not such a big deal as most of them do not have the necessary hardware to render DTS:X or Dolby Atmos faithfully anyway.

At least you will be able to pass-through DTS:X through the included eARC to a dedicated full surround system or soundbar.

WebOS 2023

And lastly we have the new webOS 2023. In terms of functionality there are not many differences here. Yes, we do get some changes and additions but the biggest change is its visual redesign. Everything else remains almost the same.

Closing

Interesting year for LG this is. LG needed a winner as QD-OLED really challenged their number one position in the OLED race and MLA seems to be what they needed. Can LG still be the King of the OLED market and how does the clash between MLA OLED and QD-OLED will push the industry forward? Exciting times ahead!

Furthermore it seems that LG decided to make certain changes in their lineup with NanoCells falling into oblivion, miniLEDs seem to slowly follow the same route while traditional OLEDs with the C3 OLED at the tip of their spear become more of a mid-tier offering in order to catch a bigger market share.

As always to keep things as simple as possible we have added comparison tables at the beginning and end of this guide in order for you to have a way of comparing between the most significant features of each new TV directly.

LG Z3 OLED (8K OLED TV)

Type : Flat

The Z3 OLED is the only 8K TV, LG has on offer for 2023. Furthermore its the only TV along with the G3 that uses LG’s new MLA technology in combination with a heatsink.

Additionally being part of the OLED Evo brand means that it comes with all the latest tech and features LG has in store for us this year.

LG M3 OLED (4K OLED TV)

The LG M3 is a new entry in LG’s lineup. Being part of the OLED series the most notable feature of the M3 is its wireless Zero Connect Box which allows the TV to have what LG calls “One Wall Design”.

Basically this feature is similar to Samsung’s One Connect Box where all the ports and connections are placed on a separate box. But the difference in this one is that the M3 uses wireless signals and doesn’t need a cable to connect to the panel as the One Connect Box does.

LG G3 OLED (4K OLED TV)

Most eyes are on the LG G3 OLED this year and not without reason. It’s the first 4K TV that uses the new MLA (Multi Lenses Array) technology in combination with an OLED EX panel and a heatsink. This allows the panel to further up its brightness output and improve even further its viewing angles.

Furthermore new additions this year is support for DTS, QMS (Quick Media Switching) and sound up-mixing up to 9.1.2 channels. Regarding its OS the new webOS 2023 offers a new redesigned environment that feels fresh but ultimately offers almost the same functionality.

LG C3 OLED (4K OLED TV)

Naturally the LG C3 OLED is going to be for one more year one of the most successful OLED TVs LG has in their arsenal. Although it is still part of the OLED Evo brand, the C3 OLED is not using the new MLA technology nor it has a heatsink. As such it comes with a 2nd generation OLED EX panel but still comes with all the bells and whistles we get in the higher tier G3.

The B3 OLED is going to be the most affordable LG OLED in the US market this year as LG decided to keep the A series only for some select regions. Compared to the C3 OLED it comes with a slightly less capable processor, lower brightness and only two HDMI 2.1 ports.

The LG A3 OLED is a strange one. This one is basically the TV that replaces the 2022 A2 OLED but for some reason it will not be released either in the US or the UK markets.

Compared to the other OLEDs the A3 is far less capable as it loses a lot of the more advanced features we find above like the 100/120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 ports.

Moving on to LED LCD territory the QNED85 is the only TV this year with the miniLED backlight. Specs wise it seems this is very similar to the LG B3 OLED but with the obvious change in the panel and the backlight technology.

The next QNED80 seems to use the less capable Edge LED backlight and loses some features we see in the QNED85 like Dolby Atmos and DTS support along with 120Hz/Dolby Vision.

Keep this one in check as this is the most affordable TV LG has that comes with many gaming features like 100/120Hz frequency panel and HDMI 2.1 ports.

The QNED75 is the last TV in the QNED series and we get further reductions in its processing abilities and panel frequency. Regarding its HDMI capabilities we only get HDMI 2.0b here that only support eARC and ALLM.

Type : Flat

Since LG phased out NanoCells completely the UR series is next with the UR90 being at the top of them. Keep in mind that most models in the UR series are almost identical, with minor differences between them that are mostly aimed in specific regions.

The UR90 comes with a Direct LED backlight, a 50/60Hz panel and loses Dolby Vision support.

The UR80 is another model in the affordable 4K LED LCD series and practically we couldn’t find any obvious differences with the UR90 above. It is more likely these two models have differences in the webOS along with slightly different performance capabilities.

The only obvious difference in the UR75 is the reduction of its HDMI ports to only two. Everything else remains the same.
