Since its emergence in 2006, the brand earned acclaim for its budget-friendly yet high-performance offerings. However, beyond the realms of budget-friendly options lies a more upmarket terrain. And in our Q Acoustics 5040 review today we will test one of their latest offerings, designed specifically for this untapped territory.

Nestled between the budget-friendly 3000 models and the illustrious Concept range, the 5040 stands as a refined offering in a market that Q Acoustics was lacking presence. Furthermore the new 5000 series offer a complete range of speakers, including the 5050 and 5040 floorstanders, the 5020 and 5010 bookshelves and the 5090 center speaker. Thus Q Acoustics gives you the ability to create all kinds of setups, depending their use.

Before we start our analysis let’s go over the specs real quick. The Q Acoustics 5040 is a 2-way floorstanding speaker with a rear-ported design. It comes equipped with a 25mm soft dome tweeter and twin 12.5cm mid/bass drivers while it features many proprietary technologies including a C3 Continuous Curved Cone design, Point-2-Point (P2P) internal bracing and Helmholtz Pressure Equalizers (HPETM).

Overall the Q Acoustics 5040 seems like a really interesting speaker. Especially considering all the tech it comes packed with. And while the price is more than affordable there is great competition in this price range. This makes any new entry extremely hard to distinguish itself from the rest. Can the new 5040 make a difference? Let’s find out.

Design, Inputs and Features

Exterior design & Dimensions

As always we will start with the design. The Q Acoustics 5040 stands as a testament to elegance in speaker design. Looking slightly similar to the Concept 500 we tested before, the minimalist approach to the exterior design ensures that the speaker not only produces captivating sound but also serves as a stylish addition to your media entertainment room.

The 5040 measure 38.1 x 14.2 x 11.5 in (967 x 361 x 293 mm) including the spikes and stabilizer. Their weight was measured at 39.7 lbs (18.0 kg) each, making them easy to handle and move around.

Most of Q Acoustics speakers have a very distinct look and the 5040 is no different. Keeping the treble unit between the two mid/bass units was always Q Acoustics preferred array. And this, it seems will not change anytime soon. This is a speaker that screams from miles away about its origins.

Cabinet

Evidently crafted from MDF, the enclosure of the Q Acoustics 5040 is a masterpiece in vibrational control. The High-Density Fiberboard (HDF) baffle, laminated with a layer of butyl rubber and black acrylic trim, not only enhances the visual appeal but also plays a crucial role in minimizing low-frequency vibrations.

The strategic implementation of Q Acoustics Point-2-Point (P2P) internal bracing in the 5040 support the parts of the enclosure that need to be stiffened, making the new enclosures exceptionally rigid. This ensures structural rigidity, contributing to an uncolored and immersive audio experience.

HPE (Helmholtz Pressure Equalizer)

But Q Acoustics did not rely only on the cabinet’s design to reduce resonances. They also used HPE (Helmholtz Pressure Equalizer) technology designed to convert pressure to velocity. And as a result reduce the overall pressure gradient within the speaker enclosure. As this technology is perfect for taller loudspeakers that tend to resonate at a single favored frequency.

Grilles

While the Q Acoustics 5040 exhibits a captivating appearance even without the grilles, the option to include them adds versatility. The vestigial grilles, when attached, provide a touch of sophistication, preserving the sleek lines of the speaker. Whether you prefer the exposed drivers for a bold statement or the subtle elegance of the grilles, the choice is yours.

Stand

The Q Acoustics 5040 maintains stability and balance with the use of its unique stand. The speaker is supported by height-adjustable spikes at the front and stabilizing aluminum outriggers at the rear.

The carefully designed stand not only serves a functional purpose but also contributes to the overall visual coherence. The absence of a sprung base, in comparison to its Concept 50 sibling, subtly distinguishes the 5040’s design.

Drivers Design

At the heart of the Q Acoustics 5040 lies its proprietary driver design. The 1″ fabric-dome tweeter, positioned meticulously between two 5″ plastic-cone woofers, forms a vertical D’Appolito drive-unit array.

The unique “Continuous Curve Cone” profile of the woofers, developed through Finite Element Analysis (FEA), ensures a harmonious blend of bass performance and midrange frequency control, minimizing harmonic distortion.

High-Frequency Driver

The tweeter, sealed hermetically and mechanically isolated from the front baffle, showcases meticulous attention to detail. With a narrow concave roll surround and a shallow waveguide, it contributes to the speaker’s well-controlled frequency response and dispersion.

The inner chamber is also carefully vented for lower distortion. With a lower crossover point for seamless integration through the crossover region. The result is a high-frequency reproduction that seamlessly integrates with the midrange, promising a captivating listening experience.

Mid/Bass Drivers

At the heart of the ground-up mid/bass driver design is the C3 Continuous Curved Cone. The woofers, reflex-loaded with a port positioned intelligently at the rear, undergo rigorous engineering.

The “Continuous Curve Cone” profile, combined with a half-roll surround and a 30.5mm voice coil wound from low-mass copper-clad aluminum wire (CCAW), ensures optimal bass weight and articulation. The substantial magnet, coupled with Helmholtz Pressure Equalizers (HPE), further enhances low-frequency performance.

Drivers Specifications

The combination of the 1″ treble unit with the twin 5″ mid/bass drivers give the Q Acoustics 5040 the following characteristics. A frequency response of 39 Hz – 30 kHz (- 6dB), 6 ohms of nominal impedance and 91.5 dB sensitivity.

Furthermore the speaker boasts a crossover point at 2.5kHz, seamlessly blending the characteristics of the tweeter and woofers. The result is a cohesive audio output that captures the nuances of your favorite content. Recommended power is set between 25 – 150 W.

Connectivity

The Q Acoustics 5040 embraces simplicity in connectivity. With a single pair of binding posts at the bottom of the rear panel, the setup process remains straightforward.

The binding posts, designed with a low profile, accommodate various connection options, ensuring compatibility with different speaker cables. The focus on ease of use extends from design to functionality.

Positioning & Setup

The speakers are compact and light enough, which makes them easy to handle by yourself. They do not need any special handling. But you do need to attach the stand by yourself.

The whole process includes attaching the front spikes and the rear stabilizing aluminum outrigger with the included screws. This is a fairly straightforward process but you do need to be extra careful not to scratch the fine crafted cabinets.

Placement

Achieving optimal performance from the Q Acoustics 5040 involves meticulous placement considerations. With a tonally balanced sound signature, these floorstanding speakers thrive when positioned at least 20cm away from the rear wall and 50cm from the side walls. Recommended distance between them is 2.0 – 4.0 m apart.

Also turning the loudspeakers slightly inwards will sharpen the stereo image at the expense of a narrower sound stage. While this placement establishes a solid foundation, you have the flexibility to fine-tune the speaker’s position based on room acoustics and personal preferences.

Running Hours

Like a fine instrument that matures with time, the Q Acoustics 5040 benefits from a running-in period. Allowing the speakers to operate for an extended duration, preferably around 100 hours, facilitates the gradual optimization of performance. During this phase, the drivers settle, and the speaker unveils its true potential, delivering a more refined and nuanced audio output.

There is one last thing to mention here. In our movies testing we tend to strictly use a 4.0 channels surround system. A full surround system can sometimes cover some weaknesses many speakers have.

But with our half baked system it is easier to determine how they can perform. Obviously if you add a subwoofer along with a center speaker the overall immersion will increase tenfold. So keep this in mind when you read our reviews.

As for our music testing we always switch to a standard 2.0 channels audio setup that most audiophiles tend to go with. Obviously since we are more into movies we will use an AV receiver instead of separates. But as you can imagine a dedicated music setup will do even better in this regard.

So without further delay, and after finishing the necessary audio calibrations with our Marantz AV receiver, we moved on with our tests.

Movies

Battleship

We start our movies review with Battleship in 4K UHD. The film’s quality may be questionable but its DTS:X mix is surely an impressive one.

The Q Acoustics 5040 definitely establishes itself as a sonic flagship. The front soundstage became a battleground where the speakers, with their expressive dynamics, painted a vivid audio landscape. Explosive sequences reverberated with impactful precision, showcasing the 5040’s prowess in delivering dynamic and immersive soundscapes.

As the on-screen action unfolded, dialog pierced through with crystal-clear clarity, ensuring that every spoken word contributed to the narrative tapestry.

Concurrently, in the realm of bass, the Q Acoustics 5040 flexed their sonic muscles, providing a foundation that underlined the cinematic experience. The low-frequency notes manifested with a perfect blend of punch and authority, adding a tactile dimension to the explosive visuals.

The overall sound quality remains a testament to the speaker’s ability to reproduce movie soundtracks with finesse. Capturing the nuances that elevate the auditory experience in action-packed films like “Battleship.”

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

We then transitioned to the enchanting world of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies with its mesmerizing Dolby Atmos mix. The Q Acoustics 5040 maintained their sonic composure with finesse. The front soundstage transformed into a realm of symphonic intricacies, where every note and melody found its place in the sonic tapestry.

Next, we switched to a pure 2.0 channels audio setup with only the two front speakers connected and we streamed a selection of FLAC music tracks through the front USB port of our Marantz receiver.
