LG QNED80 4K LED LCD TV Review

It’s been almost two years since we last checked on one of LG’s QNED models. With LG focusing mostly on promoting their OLED TVs the QNED series felt slightly like an afterthought. But the time has come and so has our LG QNED80 2023 review. So in this article we will put this mid tier release to the test and see what is good and what not for the price asked.

Now, we need to mention that LG has been using the same QNED model numbering for some years. So QNED80 in 2023 has the same name as QNED80 in 2022. Only the year changes and this is not always mentioned in the promoting material. So be extra careful which model you buy because a simple number can make a big difference.

Before we start our analysis let’s go over the specs real quick. The LG QNED80 2023 comes with an IPS panel with 120Hz frequency while for processing we find the α7 Gen 6 4K processor. This is an Edge LED TV with local dimming that supports HDR10 and HLG. For audio we get both Dolby Audio and DTS decoding and lastly for its smart functionality we find the latest webOS 23.

There is big competition in this price range so does the QNED80 manages to stay on top? Keep reading as we answer all questions.

Design

Obviously we will start with the design. The TV has a simple look but is rather effective. Build quality is pretty good for the price asked and the whole body feels sturdy enough and well constructed.

Measurements

Thickness of the TV is about 1.20″ (3.0 cm) which is normal for an Edge LED TV. Since there are no LEDs behind the panel these models usually are far more thin than Direct LED or FALD units.

Its borders are thin enough but we have seen even better. We measured them just 0.50″ (1.3 cm). This thickness is good enough for the image to look immersive enough.

Back Side

At the back we find all ports on the right side divided into two groups with one looking sideways and the other downwards. The power connector is kept separately, as usual, on the left side.

The TV doesn’t seem to have any special grooves for cable management. But LG made sure to add special clips that you can insert at various places on the back in order to keep everything nice and tidy.

Stand

The design of the stand follows the fairly standard bench type that offers the TV more stability. But on the other hand you need a bigger furniture if you plan on placing it on one instead of the wall. The legs are made out of plastic and have a v-shaped design. We did notice some wobble even in our 55″ size model so we are not sure how the bigger ones would do here.

Keep in mind that a second stand position is offered if your furniture is small for the legs to fit. A very handy feature that should be a standard in all TVs nowadays.

Lastly the back of the legs are hollow so you can route your cables through them. This way you can keep a clean look under the panel.

Remote

As for the remote the one we found in the QNED80 is exactly the same one we used in some of the other 2023 LG TVs, like the LG C3 OLED and LG UR9000.

To be honest the one we have is really good as LG made slight updates on it last year. And it seems that LG feels comfortable with this design to keep it exactly the same for one more year.

All functions remain the same with LG’s unique pointer system, the same universal remote functionality and smart features. Also the lower number of buttons is a welcome one while we still get six dedicated buttons as before.

These feature Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, LG Channels, Sling and Amazon Alexa. The only change this year is the switch from Google Assistant to Sling, which is a rather strange one. But we have seen that in some regions this button is used for other functionality. So it really depends on the market.

Video Quality

Processor technology used

The processor in the QNED80 is the new α7 Gen 6 AI Processor 4K and as usual the details on these chips are very slim. All manufacturers are shy of giving too many details on what is the same or what they change and 2023 is no different.

But as always AI is the key word for one more year as LG is heavily promoting the AI processing capabilities of these chips that use a combination of machine learning algorithms in conjunction to a huge image database in order to offer an improved overall image and superior AI upscaling.

The a7 Gen 6 AI processor 4K is basically a toned down version of the company’s flagship a9 Gen 6 AI processor 4K. The chip is losing some advanced features but on the other hand retains some basic ones.

In this one we find the AI Picture Pro and AI Sound Pro suites for image and audio processing along with the AI Super Scaling feature that upscales all content to 4K quality.

Resolution and Up-scaling

As always first comes our upscaling testing. We run a few videos in different resolutions ranging from ultra low quality ones, some 480p DVDs, some in 720p and obviously 1080p resolutions. We tried broadcasting signals, streaming content and discs to have a better, all around idea of the TV’s capabilities.

First we start with low resolution content upscaled to 4K. The TV did ok here but not extremely good. There was some loss of detail while the whole image felt slightly over-sharpened. This means that text would also loose some of its clarity.

As for low quality streaming content the QNED80 was capable of smoothing the video enough to keep macro-blocking at a minimum. But this resulted in some loss of detail.

Audio Processing

In terms of audio processing the TV comes with LG’s AI Sound Pro suite. This is capable of up-mixing low quality audio into full blown 5.1.2 channels audio. We will talk in more detail about the audio in its dedicated section so if this interests you keep reading.

Lighting technology used

Being a mid tier release the LG QNED80 2023 comes with an Edge LED backlight with local dimming. This is the same backlight we saw in the LG UR9000 recently.

Edge LED Explained

An Edge LED backlight means that the TV has an array of LEDs on the top and bottom of the screen. This type of backlight is obviously far cheaper to incorporate and thus used in many lower tier models.

This system comes with the usual advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand TVs with such a backlight tend to be slightly thinner, as is evident with this one. But on the other hand we tend to see strips of light from top to bottom. This mostly happens when a bright object is displayed on a dark background and moves across the screen.

If you want a better backlight system then you will certainly have to go much higher in price. And that is the QNED85 which is the only LG TV in 2023 that comes with a mini LED backlight. Keep in mind that LG has no FALD equipped TVs this year. So it’s either an Edge LED one or a much more expensive mini LED type.

Number of Dimming Zones

Just like the LG UR9000, this TV has six dimming zones that are used by its local dimming system.

Blooming & Zones Transitioning

Unfortunately, from what we experienced, the local dimming in the QNED80 behaved the same as the one in the UR9000. With local dimming enabled there is a lot of blooming visible in dark scenes which really becomes bothering. When you turn local dimming off things are better as blooming completely disappears. But this has a negative impact on the contrast as the entire panel is lit up looking completely washed out.

Although with local dimming it may look a bit better you just have to choose what you like better. So our suggestion is to try both with local dimming on and off and decide for yourself what you find more pleasing.

Brightness / Contrast

Next we have our brightness tests. Keep in mind that different settings of the local dimming feature give different measurements. In our case we decided to turn local dimming to high.

SDR and HDR Measurements

First test is the SDR brightness over a 10% window and the number we got was 602 nits which is very good by SDR standards. It is enough for most rooms conditions and can even combat glare in a very bright area.

We then switched to HDR content and in our HDR brightness over a 10% window test we measured 640 nits. This is good enough even though nothing impressive to talk about.

You will get this kind of brightness with local dimming set to high which means you will have to accept some severe blooming. If you turn this off brightness goes down and you get a washed out look. But blooming goes away.

Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL)

As with most TVs nowadays the QNED80 2023 comes with an Automatic Brightness Limiter (ABL). This system lowers the overall brightness of the screen when large parts of it become very bright for a long period of time.

The TV did lower its brightness after an extensive period of displaying a bright static screen. Obviously you will have to look for it to see the change but comparing the original image with the final one the difference is obvious.

But this is so subtle that in most cases you are not even going to notice it. Maybe only if you use the TV as a computer monitor or in some very rare cases. Otherwise this is not a problem at all.

EOTF Tracking

The TV showed difficulty following the EOTF reference values very close. At near black levels the TV was brighter while after a certain point the TV was always dimmer than it should.

The TV has a smooth roll off with results in good details preservation. Overall the TV behaved very close to the LG UR9000. Which is not all that surprising since both of them use the same backlight.

Contrast Performance

In terms of contrast the QNED80 2023 comes with an IPS panel. This means that the TV does not have very good contrast as this is a characteristic of all IPS like panels. The result of this is that you get blacks that look more grey-ish that true deep blacks, which is particularly evident if you use the TV in a completely dark environment.

Keep in mind that contrast will behave differently depending on the local dimming feature.

With it turned off contrast is lower but you get no blooming. When you turn local dimming on contrast is noticeable better but you will get much more blooming in return. So pick your poison.

Viewing angles

The QNED80 2023 is using an IPS panel which is good with higher viewing angles. It cannot reach the extreme angles of OLED technology but IPS and IPS-like panels perform far better than any VA ones will ever be capable of.

For this TV specifically we would say that a maximum of 30-35 degrees is the best you can get as anything more and the image quality will start to deteriorate a lot.

The TV is lacking any kind of wide viewing angle technology that we see in some of the top tier models but for its class it fares pretty good to be used as a family TV.

HDR support

As far as HDR support the QNED80 2023 comes with only the basics which is the same as all low tier UHD releases from LG the last few years and exactly the same with the UR9000. You only get the basic HDR10 that is required for 4K UHD playback along with HLG that is used mainly for broadcasting.

You also get HDR10 Pro which basically adjusts the brightness and color levels of every frame. Basically this is LG’s dynamic tone mapping feature for HDR10 content.

This shouldn’t be confused with HDR10+ which is completely missing from all LG TVs, and is similar to Dolby Vision. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision use dynamic metadata for each frame while with HDR10 Pro the TV itself has to process each frame individually and apply its dynamic tone mapping.

Color coverage

Next is our color performance tests. The TV claims to support wide color gamut so let’s see how good it is.

In our measurement tests the TV reached about 92% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. On the wider REC.2020 color space we got a coverage of 68%.

These numbers are good enough for this category. The use of Quantum Dot technology does help keep these numbers high enough.

DeltaE Errors

The TV’s out of the box performance was good. White balance needed adjustment but gamma and color temperature were both close to their target values. Surprisingly almost all colors remained under the DeltaE error limit of three.

After calibration the TV was even better. Some problems like white balance was vastly improved while everything else remained accurate enough. Colors were further improved resulting in a very accurate image.

From all the above we can say that if you are a casual user that doesn’t like to go into much trouble calibrating this TV you will surely appreciate the QNED80’s accuracy. But even if you want to get this little extra after calibrating it, doing so can be a rather easy process making this TV a very user friendly model.

Color Gradients

Color gradients in the QNED80 2023 were not so good. We noticed banding in almost all shades but it was more noticeable with dark green colors. Most other shades were not so obvious with real world content so overall it didn’t bother us as much as with this test material.

There is also a Noise Reduction function in case you do see it. But if you enable it some detail is lost and in general we never liked this feature much.

Panel Uniformity

Next is our panel uniformity tests.

Gray panel uniformity was good but not perfect. We did notice some vignetting, which is an effect that shows darker corners than the center of the screen. But the effect was very subtle and certainly not obvious enough.

Near black and black uniformity on the other hand were bad. The screen showed some very obvious clouding and unfortunately its local dimming cannot do much to improve the situation. With only six zones available there is so much this feature can do to avoid blooming.

Motion performance

We move on to our motion performance tests. The QNED80 2023 comes with a 120Hz panel and a backlight frequency of 480Hz.

The amount of flickering you are going to see heavily depends on the picture mode you will use. Because different picture modes flicker at different frequencies. For example Filmmaker and Cinema modes both flicker at 480Hz. On the other hand with HDR content the frequency dropped to 120Hz.

In terms of motion the TV performed really well with minor blur visible with fast moving objects. This is the result of the QNED80’s good response times. On the other hand this results in some very obvious stutter.

Additionally the TV can remove judder from both 24p and 60p content.

Motion Interpolation

The TV comes with a standard motion interpolation feature. This is a feature that smooths motion and removes blur and judder from fast camera movements. Its performance was decent enough for most content. But with very demanding action scenes it had big problems.

This resulted in major artifacts appearing as the TV couldn’t keep up. So it really depends on the kind of content you will be watching to determine if it is worth it or not. Our suggestion is to try both ways and decide which one you like the most.

Also be careful because very aggressive settings will make the “Soap Opera Effect” to appear. Motion Interpolation can be enabled from the TruMotion setting in the menu. You can set that to “User Selection” and then adjust the De-blur and De-judder sliders according to your preferences.

Black Frame Insertion (BFI)

There is also the standard by now Black Frame Insertion (BFI) feature which basically is a motion interpolation technique that inserts a black frame between every two individual frames and this can really create much smoother motion.

But while the end result is pretty good there are some downsides to this with the most obvious being the lower brightness being displayed due to the additional black frames. BFI can be enabled from the Motion Pro setting in the TruMotion menu.

Overall Motion Impressions

The TV did pretty good here for most of the content we tried. But it just fell short of being great when demanding content asked for it. Motion interpolation does fix a few problems but you need to be careful with the settings you use. BFI adds an additional option if standard motion interpolation does not cut it for you.

Input lag Measurements

The TV’s input lag is next in the list.

According to our measurements the QNED80 2023 measured an average of 14.0ms input lag in both 1080p and 4K resolutions at 60Hz. This is pretty much what we were expecting to get so no surprises here. For 120Hz these numbers fell to an almost perfect 5.5ms.

Obviously you are going to get such low numbers only if you use the available Game mode. As outside that the input lag will increase to around 148.0ms. This is a bit too high to be used even for slow paced offline games.

The TV may not be able to display anything above 120Hz but it does support 1440p resolution. This one is mainly used with PC gaming so if you are into that the QNED80 has no problem whatsoever.

Other Gaming Features

The TV also comes with Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). This can be used with any devices that support that like the PS5 and Xbox consoles and can greatly benefit users.

As with many LG TVs, you will also find HGiG Mode. This is HDR Gaming Interest Group’s technology that ensures you enjoy HDR games the way that their creators and developers intended.

And since we talk about gaming we should not forget to mention that the QNED80 2023 does support cloud gaming. Unfortunately this year we only get Geforce Now. Google Stadia that was available in the previous years is no longer available as Google decided to shut down the service.

Obviously for Geforce Now you will need to have the appropriate subscription and gamepad but having built-in support is another plus.

VRR Support

The QNED80 2023 comes with support for all VRR technologies including HDMI Forum VRR, AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync. All of them can be enabled in the Game Optimizer menu.

Trying Out a Few Games

For our real world testing we connected both our PS5 and Xbox series X to one of the HDMI ports of the TV. The games we tend to try are F1 2022 and Dead Space. Dead Space works only in 60Hz but F1 2022 can do both 60Hz and 120Hz so we tried both.

Not much to say here as the TV behaved as you would imagine in both cases. Very low response times resulted in extremely fast rendering of all our commands on the screen. And while Dead Space is a slow paced game, F1 2022 really showed what this TV can do. Both 60Hz and 120Hz worked flawlessly and we didn’t notice any abnormal behavior.

All the above make the QNED80 2023 an excellent gaming TV at a very affordable price.

Overall Image Quality Impressions

Overall the TV performed very good in some areas and very bad in others. This gave us very mixed feelings because we could not determine if in the end we liked the TV or not.

On the one hand its brightness is good, colors are great and out-of-the-box accuracy is nice. It has good viewing angles, very low input lag and plenty of gaming features.

On the other hand its contrast is really bad and its Edge LED backlight with local dimming is making things even worse. With local dimming you get major blooming while without it the whole screen looks washed out. There is obvious banding in many color shades, black uniformity is bad while motion interpolation cannot keep up during very fast action scenes.

Audio Quality

Many mid tier and low cost TVs use very basic audio systems and the QNED80 2023 is no different. So don’t expect any surprises here.

Audio System – Channels & Power Rating

The TV uses a 2.0 channels configuration with 20 watts of power output in a 2 x 10 watts configuration.

Audio Formats Support

The TV supports Dolby Audio but there is no native Dolby Atmos. At least you can pass-through Dolby Atmos through the included eARC to some Dolby Atmos soundbar or dedicated sound system.

The good news are that the TV can also decode DTS sound. But for DTS:X you will have to pass it through the eARC port to some DTS:X capable system.

Audio Features

A feature we find in all LG TVs is AI Sound Pro. This is responsible for up-mixing legacy audio into virtual 5.1.2 channels surround sound. Basically this is a virtual technology that tries to create surround audio without surround speakers.

The end result is a mixed bag really, as is the case with most virtual sound technologies. There are moments it can make the sound feel more immersive but it cannot simulate a real surround audio system, not even close.

Another returning feature from last year is Bluetooth Surround Ready. With this you can use the built-in Bluetooth to connect rear speakers to the TV. But keep in mind that by adding a couple of rear speakers doesn’t mean that you can have a true 5.1 channels audio system.

As the TV will use only a legacy stereo tracks and up-mix that to all the available speakers along with the rear Bluetooth ones. As a result the surround effect is not as good or precise as you would expect. But certainly is slightly better than the simple two front channels.

And lastly the TV is WiSA Ready. This means you can connect WiSA enabled speakers to it.

Overall Audio Performance Impressions

We tried various content with this TV and overall it performed as you would expect. Its limited audio system can’t do much to create a very immersive environment.

All activity was completely front oriented with the output lacking in depth and extension. Also the quality of the sound is nothing to brag about. The available drivers miss a lot of details while bass is on the light side making action films feel completely flat.

But if you are not a very demanding user then all of the above will certainly not bother you so much. Dialog is distinct enough which makes news broadcastings, sports and casual TV series a pleasant experience. The TV can get loud but a lot of compression is audible when you push it too much.

Overall we would call this the definite casual experience. If you do not care about sound very much then this will not bother you at all. But if you really want good sound a good quality soundbar or full surround system is a necessity here.

Ports and Connectivity

Next we will be looking at all the connection ports available.

Starting from the top we get a USB port for connecting external storage devices. Next there are four HDMI ports and then another USB port. Lastly we find the antenna port at the bottom. All the above ports look sideways.

We also get some ports looking downwards. Here we find an optical audio output along with an Ethernet port for wired connection to your local network. And lastly there is an RS-232C jack.

HDMI Specifications

With the QNED80 2023 we get two HDMI 2.1 ports along with two more older HDMI 2.0 ones.

While LG tends to offer four HDMI 2.1 ports in many of their top tier TVs this is not the case with the QNED80. Only their OLED lineup seems to get that while the QNED ones come with only two. And to make matters even worse one of them is also the one with ARC/eARC functionality. So if you plan on using that then you are left with a single HDMI 2.1 port.

The HDMI 2.1 ports support all new and old features including 4K@120Hz, ARC, eARC, ALLM, VRR, G-Sync, FreeSync, HFR and HDMI-CEC. For the first time we also find support for QMS (Quick Media Switching) which is an HDMI 2.1 feature that eliminates the black screen when the TV has to switch between different framerates. Only keep in mind that all connected devices need to support QMS for this to work.

As we mentioned above there is no 144Hz support as LG still does not support this in any of their TVs.

Connectivity Observations

Again, the Ethernet port is still the usual 100Mbps one. But this does not surprise us, as even flagship TVs in 2023 have not upgraded to Gbit speeds yet.

Streaming requirements and internet connections have greatly advanced the last few years. This made the 100Mbps limit obsolete a while back. And while most TVs update their WiFi capabilities (some models even support WiFi6 this year) the Ethernet adapters are still the same.

And lastly the USB ports are the older 2.0. Very few TVs come with USB 3.0 and this doesn’t seem to change any time soon.

Wireless Capabilities

When it comes to its wireless capabilities the LG QNED80 2023 supports WiFi5 (802.11ac) along with Bluetooth v5.0.

OS, Apps and Features

The new LG QNED80 2023 is using LG’s latest webOS 23, which is found in all their 2023 releases. While the OS is fundamentally the same it seems that LG decided to make a facelift this year. The previous design, that we got in 2021, could use some updating. So LG’s plan was to improve things a bit.

What we have here is exactly the same software we saw in some of the other LG TVs released this year like the C3 OLED and the UR9000. So this part of our review will be similar and we will make changes wherever we deem necessary.

webOS 23

The WebOS’s UI is still taking up the whole screen and provide you with far more visual information than any of the old versions ever did. This was a change made in 2021 and seems to continue well in 2023.

The latest webOS looks a lot like Google TV and its layout. It seems that smart TV platforms opt for a more personalized experience and as such the new webOS 23 tries to provide you with options that are tailored for your viewing habits. As such there are personalized ads, recommendations based on your viewing patterns both for streaming services and broadcasting channels and even shopping suggestions.

One feature that appeared for the first time in 2022 was user profiles. And obviously LG kept it for 2023 also. With it each family member can have their own favorite settings and streaming apps. Keep in mind that these user profiles do not extend to the image settings of the TV itself as these will remain universal.

In 2023 version the main screen is basically divided into three sections. At the top we get sponsored content. Below it there is a row with quick tabs that you can select and lastly a row of installed apps. Each quick tab opens specific sections like Games or Music for fast access.

In the second screen, which you can access by pressing the down button, you will find highlighted content as well as the “Now Streaming” section. This includes tabs from various streaming services among others.

Home Hub

For another year we find what LG calls Home Hub, previously called Home Dashboard, which is a nice little feature that lets you have an overall look at all the connections of the TV. From last year the Home Dashboard has been fully intergraded into the webOS Home screen making its access faster than before.

Various Connectivity Features

App support was always a highlight with webOS and this hasn’t changed in 2023. As such you will find all the apps you may need with more available from the online store for downloading. All the big players are present with Netflix, Youtube, Amazon Prime, HBO, Vudu, Hulu, Google Play Movies, Disney+ and Apple TV+ just to name a few of the most notable ones.

Other available apps include Apple Airplay 2 and Apple Homekit. With Airplay 2 you can stream content from other Apple devices on your TV. While HomeKit lets you control certain aspects of the TV through your mobile device.

Sports Alert

Another feature that makes a comeback this year is Sports Alert. You can set your favorite team on the TV and the QNED80 2023 will inform you when a match will be shown. It will also inform you in which channel it is in while it can also give you score updates and the likes.

The Sports Alert feature is working with the internal tuner and it gives you the ability to choose from a wide range of teams and sports.

Voice Control

And since we are talking about a smart TV platform we cannot do without voice control functionality. LG has included not only their own ThinQ AI that you can use to search for various information. But also the two most used voice control platforms including Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

By using the Magic Remote’s built-in microphone you can issue your commands. These can be search for a specific TV show or control your TVs volume and channels changing.

Keep in mind that while Amazon Alexa is built-in the TV, for Google Assistant you will need an external device.

Mobile App Support

There is also mobile app support if you prefer that instead of using the included remote. LG is using their ThinQ app that is supported both by Android and iOS devices. And with it you can issue some basic commands to your TV from your mobile device. Since it is free we suggest you give it a try.

Game Features

LG TVs were always at the forefront of gaming. And some of their dedicated features make them the best gaming TVs you can get. The QNED80 2023 may be a mid tier TV but it also includes the now famous Game Dashboard & Optimizer menus.

These two menus provide easy access to a wealth of gaming settings without the need to navigate through a myriad of menus. This way you can focus on what matters the most, which is having fun.

And as we mentioned above, there is also support for Cloud Gaming with GeForce Now available.

Compared to other TVs

This is a bit of a hard one as we couldn’t find a lot of 2023 models that could match this price. So here is what we did find.

First we have a couple of TVs from 2022. The first one is the 2022 Hisense U8H which comes at a slightly lower price than the LG. The Hisense is better in almost all categories. Better brightness, better colors and amazing contrast. The only area where the LG is better is with viewing angles. So if you can still find the U8H then definitely go for that one.

The other TV from 2022 is the Sony X80K. Here things are not so clear cut. The LG has better brightness and supports 120Hz while the Sony has slightly better processing and comes with Dolby Vision. Both TVs has obvious weaknesses so you have to decide what you prefer the most.

As for 2023 we managed to find a couple of TVs close to the price of the QNED80 and the first one is the Samsung Q60C. Here the LG has slightly better brightness, better viewing angles and 120Hz support. On the other hand the Samsung has better contrast and felt slightly more accurate.

Last but not least we have the 2023 TCL Q7/Q750G. The TCL is actually cheaper than the LG but it managed to beat it in almost all categories. The LG has better viewing angles but in most other categories the TCL is the clear winner.

Final Thoughts

When the name LG pops up the first thing that comes to mind is obviously their OLED series. Unfortunately this is a fact the last few years and it’s not going to change. Nevertheless their QNED series is not bad at all considering their limitations and price category.

The QNED80 2023 has decent out of the box performance with very good viewing angles, low input lag and HDMI 2.1 capabilities. In terms of smart features it gets everything you would expect and the price is definitely a very affordable one.

Unfortunately there are some areas where the TV completely disappoints. Its contrast is very bad and its Edge LED backlight with local dimming does not perform very good. If you decide to use the local dimming you get vast amounts of blooming while if you turn it off the whole screen looks washed out. We also noticed some very obvious banding and lastly the audio is average at best.

Closing our review we can say that the LG QNED80 2023 is a TV better suited for a relatively bright room. It has certain problems that surely will be enhanced if used in low lit of completely dark environments.
