Now that the dust of the initial announcements has settled and the first models start slowly to appear in various markets it is time for us to go through our annual lineup overview of all the new TVs coming in 2023. And what better way to start with, as we will go over all the new Sony TVs for 2023 that are bound to be released very soon.

Sony TVs for 2023

Sony made a bit of noise this year as for the first time they decided to skip CES, where all major brands announce their new products, and do a separate event announcing their 2023 TVs. If that was a genius strategy or not we do not know but surely it created some additional waves that most did not expect.

As for what Sony will be offering in 2023 they do have a pretty solid lineup, although there are no big new additions this year, as was the case in 2022 with their first QD-OLED, the A95K.

Also Sony will not be using LG’s new MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology in their OLED models, although they did say that this could be an option in future releases, just not for this year.

A few other things we need to mention is that Sony has new bigger sizes on offer compared to last year, with a 77″ QD-OLED and a 83″ OLED, their flagship will be the only TV that will use the new Pentonic 1000 SoC while there will be no new 8K TVs, showing an ominous future for this resolution.

Lastly it seems that the FALD backlight will be used further down the performance ladder as this year we also find it in the X85L while last year it was only used in the X90K.

Technologies returning from 2022 include the Cognitive Processor XR, which makes a comeback but with some upgrades. Their Acoustic Surface Audio system comes in various forms depending the category of each TV while Google TV once again is used as the OS of choice.

Other features that seem to have remained the same is the use of 2 HDMI 2.1 ports due to the limitation of the MediaTek chipsets that Sony is still using while they still support the standard trio of HDR formats in the likes of HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision with the HDR10+ still being absent.

We also find IMAX Enhanced, with Sony still being the only of the big three that supports DTS sound. The Bravia Cam also makes a return but this again feels more of a niche feature than a really important one.

Strangely there is no new 42″ OLED this year, which is an odd decision as this made huge waves last year. The A80L will only come in the standard 55″ to 83″ sizes.

Sony has been using the Bravia branding for some time now and this is not changing any time soon. As always, they separated their product lineup in three categories with the Bravia XR Master Series being their flagship models, their Bravia XR including all their mid and top-tier releases and the Bravia series that has mostly lower tier and budget friendly models.

Sony TVs for 2023

So let’s see what each series has on offer for this year.

Bravia XR Master Series

Bravia XR Master Series is Sony’s top of the line for 2023 but for this year the series shrunk to a single model. The new A95L. There is no 8K models that usually are included in the Master Series so most probably the 2022 Z9K will carry over to this year also.

This year’s Master Series will get some new tech along with all previously used features meaning we find the Cognitive Processor XR, have 100Hz/120Hz panels, come with 2 HDMI 2.1 ports and use Google TV for their OS.

Other returning features includes the Acoustic Surface Audio+, support for Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhanced and DTS along with DTS:X pass-through from the eARC port.

They also include Chromecast, Google Assistant, the Bravia Core streaming service from Sony, Netflix Calibrated Mode in the Netflix app, Calman Ready for picture calibration and also the optional Bravia Cam support.

Sony TVs for 2023

New are the upgraded Cognitive Processor XR that includes the ‘XR Clear Image’ technology, the upgraded 2nd generation QD-OLED panel and the inclusion of the Pentonic 1000 SoC that allows the A95L to display 4K@120Hz with Dolby Vision. In terms of software we find the new Game Menu & Eco Dashboard.

Lastly it seems that the A95L will be the only TV in 2023 that comes with upgraded connectivity as it uses WiFi6 and Bluetooth v5.2.

Bravia XR series

The Bravia XR remains for one more year their middle to higher-tier category and more or less we find the same models that correspond to their last year’s counterparts.

Naturally the A80L replaces the A80K from last year but there is no new releases to replace the 2022 A75K or the smaller A90K.

As for their LCD TVs, things are a bit mixed up as the new X95L and X93L miniLEDs are very similar with the first being released in multiple sizes in Europe but only the bigger 83″ will be released in the US. To cover the gap of the smaller sizes Sony has the X93L on offer which is basically a model that closely resembles the 2022 X95K.

Sony TVs for 2023

In terms of specs the Bravia XR series again borrows a lot of the specs and features we find in the Master Series. This means we get the same Cognitive Processor XR, 100Hz/120Hz panels, 2 HDMI 2.1 ports and Google TV. This series is covering three different technologies as we find OLED, miniLED and FALD LED LCD panels here.

All of them support Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhanced and DTS along with DTS:X pass-through from the eARC port. The A80L comes with the more advanced Acoustic Surface Audio+ while the LED LCD TVs use less capable variants of it.

Other features include Chromecast, Google Assistant, the Bravia Core streaming service from Sony, Netflix Calibrated Mode in the Netflix app, Calman Ready for picture calibration, the new Game Menu & Eco Dashboard along with the optional Bravia Cam support.

Bravia series

For the first time in the Bravia series we find a TV featuring a FALD backlight with the X85L surely being the TV to be looking for here.

The X85L and X82L seem to be the only ones that keep some gaming characteristics as they feature 100/120Hz panels and HDMI 2.1 ports. The X85L, X82L and X80L use the less capable X1 4K HDR processor while the rest uses the even less capable 4K X1 processor.

Sony TVs for 2023

All TV models below the X85L use the simpler Direct LED backlight system while all of them come with the X-Balanced audio system and Google TV with the exception being the X82L which strangely uses the more advanced Acoustic Multi-Audio variant.

The Bravia series still comes with plenty of features but some of the more advanced ones have been stripped like IMAX Enhanced. Interestingly all of them still support Dolby Vision.

New developments for 2023

Last year was a big one with the arrival of QD-OLED. 2023 may not have a similar impact but surely there are some developments that can be described as interesting to say the least.

Samsung released their 2nd generation QD-OLED panel which Sony used in their flagship while they have made certain changes and additions that seems to be for the better.

2nd generation QD-OLED panel

In 2022 Sony brought for the first time, along with Samsung, the QD-OLED technology to the market and in 2023 we get an updated version of it. Now on its 2nd generation the new QD-OLED panel features a much more efficient blue electroluminescent material and promises higher brightness, higher reliability and lower energy consumption.

Sony TVs for 2023

We have already seen this new panel in the Samsung S95C so we expect the A95L to get a similar boost across the board compared to its predecessor.

Cognitive Processor XR upgrades

Sony may be using their Cognitive Processor XR for one more year but it seems that they made some changes and additions as it now gets the new ‘XR Clear Image’ technology.

What this new feature is doing is that it gets the input signal and cleans it up with its Signal Characteristics Analysis. This is checking resolution, encoding parameters and bitrate among others in order to apply its Adaptive Noise Resolution and Adaptive Super Resolution.

Sony’s demonstration looked interesting on this and if it can do what they say it can it will be a very nice feature, especially for low quality streaming and broadcasting content.

New bigger sizes

Sony may be shy of smaller sizes in 2023 but surely they are not when it comes to adding new bigger ones.

As a result we get a 77″ QD-OLED and an 83″ OLED which were not available last year. But if you want to go even higher there is the option of the X90L LED LCD TV which in 2023 will be offered in the new gargantuan 98″ size.

Sony TVs for 2023
4K at 120Hz with Dolby Vision

In terms of gaming features not much have changed as all Sony TVs will still only have two HDMI 2.1 ports. The only change is that the A95L will be able to support 4K@120Hz with Dolby Vision and this happens because it will be the only TV that will use the new MediaTek Pentonic 1000 SoC.

Unfortunately this new SoC still does not allow for 4 HDMI 2.1 ports while Sony confirmed that all other 2023 models will use the same 2022 SoC.

Game Menu and Eco Dashboard

LG started it, Samsung followed, so it was about time Sony to offer something similar. The new Game Menu offers you the ability to gain access to certain gaming features like VRR, screen size settings and certain picture features with a press of a button instead of having to go through a myriad of menus and settings to find what you are looking for.

Also new is the Eco Dashboard which allows you not only to change energy settings, that was previously available in a more difficult to find way, but also indicate you how these settings affect power consumption and makes everything seamless and easier to comprehend.

Sony TVs for 2023

Closing

For another year Sony seems to have a very stellar lineup which consists of some new technologies mixed with many returning ones. The new A95L seems to gather most of the attention but Sony made sure to make certain changes and additions here and there to keep things interesting.

The X85L seems to be the next most interesting entry this year, at least in our opinion, as the FALD backlight find its way to more budget friendly territories and it will surely be appreciated by a lot of consumers that cannot go higher in the performance ladder.

Although most of these models are not out yet competition will be fierce for one more year and the heat will rise as we approach the summer with more of their offerings being slowly available in most regions.

As always to keep things as simple as possible we have added comparison tables at the beginning and end of this guide in order to have a way of comparing between the most significant features of each new TV directly.

Before closing this part we should mention that you can check our New Product Lineups section for more reviews and articles which we will update as we manage to get our hands on these new releases.

So without further delay let’s analyze each model separately.

The Sony A80L is Sony’s more affordable OLED and basically the only OLED that comes with the standard WOLED panel. Other than the panel the A80L comes with all the same features we find in the A95L with the most notable exception being that it is not using the new Pentonic 1000 chip. It seems that in 2023 only the A95L will be getting that one.

Sony X95L (4K miniLED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X95L

Type : Flat

With the OLEDs, things seem to be more or less simple. It is with their LED LCDs that Sony started to confuse us a lot. And we will be starting with their top flagship, the Sony X95L.

This is their best miniLED TV but for some reason only the 85″ version will be released to the US market while in UK, EU and other markets will get all three available sizes, being the 65″, 75″ and 85″.

Sony X93L (4K miniLED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X93L

Type : Flat

It seems that since the X95L is only available in 85″ in the US, the X93L will cover the gap. This is also a miniLED TV which looks awfully similar to the 2022 X95K but with certain software updates to bring it in line with the rest of the top tier offerings of 2023.

The X93L will be available in 65″, 75″ and 85″.

Sony X90L (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X90L

Type : Flat

Next in line we have the X90L and here things are a bit more clear as this one is supposed to replace the 2022 X90K. This model is losing the miniLED backlight and has to settle for a more simple FALD variant.

It still features the Cognitive Processor XR which means that it gets all the more advanced technologies and gaming features of the above models.

Sony is expecting a lot from this one and thus is being offered in 5 sizes. 55″, 65″, 75″, 85″ and the humongous 98″ one.

We have thoroughly tested this model in our Sony X90L review.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • VA display technology
  • Full Array with Local Dimming backlight system (FALD)
  • 100/120Hz frequency
  • Cognitive Processor XR
  • HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support
  • Acoustic Multi Audio

  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

Sony X85L (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X85L

Type : Flat

The X85L again seems to replace last year’s X85K but this time it surely gets some notable updates as this is again a FALD unit and not a Direct LED one as the X85K was.

We find certain reductions to this one both in terms of processing and audio but retains all the gaming features we find in the more expensive TVs making this a really affordable solution for those looking for a cheap gaming TV.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • VA display technology
  • Full Array with Local Dimming backlight system (FALD)
  • 100/120Hz frequency
  • 4K HDR Processor X1
  • HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support
  • X-Balanced Speakers
  • 4K120, VRR, ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV, Bravia Core
  • Game Menu & Eco Dashboard
  • PS5 features
  • ATSC 3.0 (US) – DVB-T2/S2/C (EU)
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

Sony X82L (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X82L

Type : Flat

The Sony X82L is a bit of a strange one. It has many of the same specifications of the X85L above but is using a Direct LED backlight instead. On the other hand it gets an upgrade on its audio by using Sony’s Acoustic Multi-Audio instead of the simple X-Balanced speakers of the X85L.

Everything else seem to be the same as above.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • VA display technology
  • Direct LED backlight system
  • 100/120Hz frequency
  • 4K HDR Processor X1
  • HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support
  • Acoustic Multi-Audio
  • 4K120, VRR, ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV, Bravia Core
  • Game Menu & Eco Dashboard
  • PS5 features
  • ATSC 3.0 (US) – DVB-T2/S2/C (EU)
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

Sony X80L (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X80L

Type : Flat

The X80L is the first model from Sony this year that loses all its gaming features. This means that we get a 50/60Hz panel with a Direct LED backlight while it is missing any HDMI 2.1 ports.

This is a really affordable unit and surely many that do not care about gaming will find this an excellent low cost offering. This is the reason why Sony will release this one in 6 different sizes from 43″ to 85″.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • IPS display technology
  • Direct LED backlight system
  • 50/60Hz frequency
  • 4K HDR Processor X1
  • HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision support
  • X-Balanced Speakers
  • ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV, Bravia Core
  • Game Menu & Eco Dashboard
  • PS5 features
  • ATSC 3.0 (US) – DVB-T2/S2/C (EU)
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

Sony X77L (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X77L

Type : Flat

We are entering the lower tier territory here and the X77L seems awfully similar to the X80L above. The only glaring difference seems to be the use of the less capable 4K Processor X1 instead of the 4K HDR X1. This one also loses Dolby Vision support as well as Bravia Core.

You can read our complete analysis and testing of this TV in our dedicated Sony X77L review.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • Direct LED backlight system
  • 50/60Hz frequency
  • 4K Processor X1
  • HDR10, HLG support
  • X-Balanced Speakers
  • ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV
  • Game Menu & Eco Dashboard
  • PS5 features
  • ATSC 3.0 (US) – DVB-T2/S2/C (EU)
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 5.0

Sony X75WL (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X75WL

Type : Flat

The Sony X75WL is again very similar to the X77L and we failed to spot any meaningful differences. These two models may very well be aimed to different markets or their differences are very small and are not mentioned anywhere.

The X75WL will be released in 5 sizes from 43″ to 75″.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • Direct LED backlight system
  • 50/60Hz frequency
  • 4K Processor X1
  • HDR10, HLG support
  • X-Balanced Speakers
  • ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV
  • Game Menu & Eco Dashboard
  • PS5 features
  • ATSC 3.0 (US) – DVB-T2/S2/C (EU)
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

Sony X75L (4K LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony X75L

Type : Flat

The X75L is another low end model and this one seems to be using the Clear Phase audio system which means it loses the X-Balanced speakers of the models above. Everything else remain the same.

Actually the X75L seem to be the most affordable 4K TV that will be available in many western markets. There are a couple of models below this one, but these are very similar and mostly aimed toward Asian markets.

Specifications
  • 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160)
  • Direct LED backlight system
  • 50/60Hz frequency
  • 4K Processor X1
  • HDR10, HLG support
  • Clear Phase audio
  • ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV
  • Game Menu & Eco Dashboard
  • PS5 features
  • ATSC 3.0 (US) – DVB-T2/S2/C (EU)
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

Sony W830L (HD Ready LED LCD TV)

Sony TVs for 2023 | Sony W830L

Type : Flat

Now, this is a weird one. And we say this because the W830L is basically an HD Ready TV, yes that is 720p resolution. Sony keeps this in circulation for one more year and this indicates that people are still buying these.

The W830L is offered in 32″ and can be a great dirty cheap solution if you need a small TV with the least cost possible.

Specifications
  • HD Ready resolution
  • Direct LED backlight system
  • 50/60Hz frequency
  • X-Reality PRO processor
  • HDR support
  • Clear Phase audio
  • ALLM, eARC
  • Google TV
  • WiFi5, Bluetooth 4.2

  1. As someone who has been a fan of Sony TVs for many years, I’m excited to see the new models coming out in 2023. I currently own a Sony OLED TV and the picture quality is simply amazing. I can only imagine how the new models will push the boundaries of visual technology even further. Sony has always been a brand that’s synonymous with quality and innovation, and I’m sure they won’t disappoint with their new releases. I’m particularly interested in the rumored improvements in gaming capabilities, as I’m an avid gamer myself. Overall, I can’t wait to see what Sony has in store for us in 2023!

    • Hello Dave. Unfortunately Sony is for one more year stuck with only 2 HDMI 2.1 ports. The Pentonic 1000 SoC is not what everyone thought it would be. MediaTek disappoints for one more time I guess.

  2. I have to be honest and thing is probably embarrassing, but I haven’t bought a new TV in about 5 years. I am glad I read this thought because it gave me a bit of motivation to but a new TV. Thanks lol

But the prices have really gone sky high from what I see. I cannot believe the difference compared to where they were a few years back.

    • Unfortunately this is the new reality for all brands. And I don’t see this changing any time soon. My suggestion is to look for a 2022 or even a 2021 model that are still being sold at huge discounts. With these new prices I see the 2021 A90J becoming a very hot piece for as long as stock is available.
