The number one TV manufacturer has presented their new TV lineup for 2019 and Samsung held nothing back as they presented a lineup so full that will leave almost no one in disappointment. Of course the main focus as every year is mostly on their premium QLED series and we are delighted to see that in 2019 almost all QLED models, except from the lowest Q60R, come with Full Array Backlights with Local Dimming functionality which greatly improves image quality and light control over any kind of Edge-lit system can. Samsung seems to have heard the consumers and as such for 2019 we get an almost complete FALD QLED series.
Also we get new silicon with the new Quantum Processors 4k and 8K that powers all the QLED series that include AI upscaling and AI sound.
But Samsung is not limiting their selves with only the QLED series and as such provide a premium UHD series that offer lower specs but also more affordable prices for those with more tight budgets. What we found very positive is that all models for 2019 include Samsung’s smart TV platform and OneRemote although certain functions are kept for only the higher models.
HDMI 2.1 features are also present even though HDMI 2.1 is not officially supported. As such the top models are getting almost all features except eARC which is unfortunately absent completely. As we go down the ladder naturally we see less HDMI 2.1 features support.
In true Samsung fashion there is no model with Dolby Vision support. Samsung is clearly heading the HDR10+ way which is supposed to be the equivalent of Dolby Vision and it only remains to be seen if their decision was the right one. Other than this we see all models support HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG HDR.
As for everything else there is a wide range of features that Samsung has spread over various models in their lineup including Bixby, Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, Ambient mode, Apple Airplay 2 as well as Samsung’s “Universal Guide”. Obviously the higher we go into the ladder more of these features are supported.
For one more year Samsung clearly focused on improving their LCD technology as much as possible and we are very happy to see the top QLED models offering image quality that is coming very close to what OLED has to offer. With MicroLED being Samsung’s answer to LG’s OLED tech on the horizon, but still a few good years until becoming available, Samsung is pushing the limits of LCD in what seems to be one of the last acts of this great screen technology that lasted for so long. But until this great change happens LCD is hitting hard with a vengeance and offers us the best that is possible to date.
Below we give a detailed list of all the new Samsung models for 2019 with key differences and specifications in order to be able to find easily the one you are looking for. As we add more reviews for these models we will update this list with the specific links for your convenience.
Before closing this part we should mention that you can check our New Product Lineups section for more reviews and articles which we will update as we manage to get our hands on these new releases.
So without further delay let’s analyze each model separately.
8K QLED TVs
Samsung Q900R / Q950R QLED TV
Type : Flat
The Q900R continues to be the only 8K set from Samsung in 2019 but this time Europe also gets some taste of this unit with the Q950R. Samsung has updated the Q900R in the US market with the new models having the Ultra Viewing Angle technology and you can distinguish which models these are by checking the model number of the unit. The 2019 units have the Q900RB naming while the older 2018 ones have the Q900RA model number.
The Q900R comes equipped with new silicone from Samsung named Quantum Processor 8K that upscales lower resolution content to 8K resolution. In addition to AI upscaling the new processor also offers AI sound that calibrates the audio according to the TV environment.
The TV uses a Full Array backlight with Local Dimming and comes equipped with a staggering 480 dimming zones for more accurate light control while brightness reaches a theoretical peak of 4,000 nits in the bigger sizes and supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
This model comes with Samsung’s One Connect Box and has HDMI 2.1 for it’s ports.

4K QLED TVs
Samsung Q90R QLED TV
Type : Flat
The Q90R is the flagship of the 4K QLED series and in many ways it is similar to the Q900R except from the fact that resolution here is 4K instead. As such it also has the new Ultra Viewing Angle tech but under the hood we find the Quantum Processor 4K instead that also supports AI upscaling to 4K resolution as well as AI sound.
The Q90R also comes with a Full Array backlight with Local Dimming and comes equipped with 480 dimming zones for more accurate light control while brightness reaches a theoretical peak of 2,000 nits in the bigger sizes and supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
This model comes with Samsung’s One Connect Box but it’s HDMI ports only support some features that are included in the 2.1 version.

Samsung Q85R QLED TV (Europe Only)
Type : Flat
Going down the QLED ladder one step we find the Q85R. This is a Europe only model and it keeps the Ultra Viewing Angle tech of the higher models as well as the Quantum Processor 4K with the AI upscaling and AI sound. The big difference here is that while this model also comes with a Full Array backlight with Local Dimming the number of dimming zones is dramatically reduced to just 96 zones and thus offers lower light control quality. Brightness is also lowered from 2,000 theoretical nits to 1,500. HDR support remains the same with HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG all supported.
Samsung’s One Connect Box is present but it’s HDMI ports only support some features that are included in the 2.1 version.

Samsung Q80R QLED TV
Type : Flat
The Q80R comes in both the US and Europe markets and it seems that it exactly the same as the Q85R hardware wise with only two differences. One is the design as each model has it’s own unique look that you can see above and both Q80R models omit the One Connect Box and instead we get all ports at the back of the main body.
The rest of the specifications are the same as the Q85R above. You can read our in-depth review of the Q80R HERE.

Samsung Q70R QLED TV
Type : Flat
The Q70R comes next in the QLED lineup and it seems that Samsung is supporting this model a lot as it comes in a huge number of sizes compared to the rest. Going down in price it means that here some features are dropped compared to the higher Q80R model.
The Q70R doesn’t have either the Ultra Viewing Angle nor the Ultra Black technologies. At least it retains the Full Array Back Light but the number of zones is further reduced to 48. But even with such a reduced number of zones having a FALD system is much better that being an edge-lit model. Also peak theoretical brightness falls to 1,000 nits.
All other specifications are the same as the Q80R model. You can read all details of the Q70R in our extensive test review HERE.

Samsung Q60R QLED TV
Type : Flat
The Q60R is the lowest model in the QLED series and the major difference we get here is that instead of a FALD system we get an Edge-lit system which has a dramatic effect on the image quality. At least it still retains the Quantum dot film that provides better and more vibrant colors. All other specs are the same as the Q70R.
You can read our in-depth review of the Q60R HERE.

Premium UHD TVs
Samsung RU8000
Type : Flat
The RU8000 is sitting at the top of the premium UHD lineup and is the first model that we don’t see the Quantum dot technology. Instead Samsung is using what they call “Dynamic Crystal Color” tech for better color representation. This is also an Edge-lit panel and the Quantum Processor 4K that we saw in all QLED models is replaced by a quad-core one that definitely will offer lower performance compared to the QLED series.
There is no One Connect Box here but at least the unit retains the OneRemote as well as it’s smart TV platform. HDMI 2.1 features support is further reduced as you can see in the list below.
Take a look at our in-depth review of the RU8000 HERE.

Samsung RU7300
Type : Curved
The RU7300 comes next in the lineup and this is the only curved model from all the units Samsung presented for 2019 so if you like the curved design this is your only option showing that curve designs generally failed to gain traction as consumers preferred the flat equivalents. This model drops the Dynamic Crystal Color engine that was present in the RU8000 and instead we get what Samsung calls PurColor engine which is a step down in color representation.
Also there is a further reduction on the features of the HDMI 2.1 version that are supported as there is no VRR support to be found. Also there is no One Remote as this model looses a few smart TV functions.

Samsung RU7100
Type : Flat
The last model in the series and the cheapest model in Samsung’s 2019 lineup, the RU7100, is basically the same as the RU7300 but with a flat panel design. Everything else remains exactly the same.

DESIGNER SERIES TVs
Samsung The Frame
Type : Flat
Samsung has updated the Frame series in 2019 by using a QLED panel that dramatically increase the image quality of this set something that was much needed for a TV that is supposed to look like a painting or work of art. This model comes with a built-in Art store that includes a huge variety of digitized artworks and with the addition of customizable bezels you can create many different variations for all tastes and environments. The Frame also has a built-in Luminance sensor in order to adjust it’s image according to the environment.

Samsung The Serif
Type : Flat
The Serif is the second model in the designer series and it’s coming from designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. With it’s large frame and floor standing legs this one looks far less like a TV and more like a piece of art that you can place in a room. Specifications are similar to the Frame and as such it also uses a QLED panel for better color coverage and better image quality. It also comes with One Connect Box that helps to hide all cables away from plain view.

My tv is so old now, it pales in comparison to these! I do have a question though: I have had a really bad eye injury, and I struggle with the blue light watching tv in the evenings. Do any of these come with blue light reduction, as we are seeing in some computers nowadays? Thanks very much.
Hello Josie. You shouldn’t worry about that because unlike computer monitors or smartphones that have a blue light reduction feature, with TVs you can control many aspects of the image including the colors. You can change the color temperature for example to a warmer setting in order to eliminate this.
Wow; great article you got there. I liked the way you took me through the whole process of these TV’s, and the fact that you bring up each TV set with its specifications separately makes it more appealing. I am really a fan of technology and this what you presented, definitely shows the passion of what you do. It also gives me a clear understanding of what to expect when deciding to purchase one beast as you have talked about.
Just perhaps, something out of the context or maybe not; what do you think of the new LG OLED Rolling-up screen TV in comparison with the ones you viewed?
Thanks for a good article.
Cheers
The new rollable LG OLED is honestly an amazing piece of electronic equipment. But no matter how amazing a technology is there are 2 factors that will determine it’s success. Price and quality compared to standard TVs we use. If they can bring the price to mainstream levels and have quality comparable to normal TVs then it has a good chance to succeed otherwise it will go down as another gimmick like they tried to do with curved panels.
Hey, thanks for the informative article. Samsung is really going at it hard. These are some astounding specs and since I am a Samsung fan myself I really love what they deliver. Keep it going with good reviews so we don’t have to bother doing much research. Thanks again for a well-written article!
Cheers!
Thank you very much. I am glad you liked it.
